And you thought converting East Coast to West Coast time was hard. The White House has tasked NASA to create a Moon time zone by 2026. Yep, a Coordinated Lunar Time, LTC, is in the works
Apparently, Einstein’s theories mean that time actually moves a tad faster on the Moon due to weaker gravity. A mere 56 microseconds a day, but enough to seriously mess with space mission precision.
NASA’s working with everyone from the Department of Defense to global space agencies to get this figured out. They plan to send folks back to the Moon by 2025 with Artemis 2 and land by 2026 with Artemis 3.
Amid these lunar adventures, NASA’s dealing with a gloomy report from the National Academies stressing funding woes and outdated infrastructure. Challenges ahead but hey, at least we’ll know what time it is on the Moon.
